One of the questions I get asked the most lately is: why did you choose Who Run the World for Reyzin Media’s first podcast? Anyone who knows me knows I love asking questions. However, what many don’t know is what I love even more is giving long structured answers to questions asked to me. So here you have it a three parter response to this question:
1. The whole purpose behind Reyzin Media was to provide the Middle East with stories you don’t typically hear in the mainstream media, or content offering. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “There are so many under-covered stories, why focus on women?” Well, women make up half of the population, and seldomly have any content that both captures their diversity and that is specifically catered to them. Also, because there are so many pockets of Lebanon and the Middle East that need to be given a voice, you could really produce a podcast about just anything you can think of. So I decided to first follow a calling that I had, which leads me to point number 2.
2. Unconsciously, and in some ways consciously, I needed role models that would inspire me to go after my dream.
It’s one thing having a dream, but it’s a whole other thing to build up the courage to actually start making it happen. Somehow I knew if I met women who overcame their own fears and self-doubt to do whatever it is they set their minds to do, I would find the courage within me to do the same. When you hear us talking about the power of role models, the power is real you guys.
3. I try to avoid working on my own, and I was about to start a company all on my lonesome. So I decided that I would delay being alone for a bit, and team up with Marilyn, a host/partner in crime who I trusted, was passionate about gender issues, and who would unequivocally push me to be the best producer I could be. Oh, and not to mention who is a really good friend that I spend half the time laughing with. If you’ve listened to our episodes you’ll quickly realize what I’m talking about. (and if you have not, what are you waiting for?)
So there you have it, my long winded answer. I’m so proud of Who Run the World’s first season, and to share it with all of you. I can’t wait for season 2, and I also can’t wait to share with you the new shows I’ve also been producing about food, music, social issues, news and politics all centered around the Middle East.
